Web Design and Development

What To Look For In A Web Developer

You fostered your business idea from infancy and now it’s blossomed into a working, functioning company. Everything is great, but in order to really get out into the community and beyond, you’ll have to consult the services of a really good website developer (unless you happen to be a master coder). With every Tom, Dick and Harry claiming to own a world class web development firm, choosing the right company for your tastes can be tricky. Here are a few tips to help you and your business grow into exactly what you want it to be.

Do some research on the internet about quality web development companies. You may find one that looks appealing, but think to yourself whether you want someone local or someone far away. The perks of local web companies can’t be overstated, but that’s not to say to automatically avoid anyone outside the reaches of your city. Sometimes it’s great to be able to sit down for lunch with your developer and ask to see the progress and how things are working. You’ll even be able to tweak components to your liking this way. The only perks that could come from a long distance web programmer solely relies on his/her competence and level of meticulousness. They should schedule video chat sessions with you, just so you know how things are turning out.

Get to know the team that you’ll be working with. Figure out who’s working on the budget, who’s providing the layout, who’s writing the code and who’s focused on the search engine optimization element. This way you’ll have a good idea of who to contact depending on your needs.

Price is obviously a key component is determining if you’ll give someone your support or move on to another company. Services may cost anywhere between $400 and $4,000 depending on the amount of work that has to be done. Don’t be afraid to ask for the breakdown of fees- each part of the process has its own separate cost. For example, domain name, hosting services, visual graphics, the development itself, and marketing will have different associated fees. If it’s an expensive or long term project, the company’s rate could be fairly high. Thus, ask about payment options and/or down payments. Finally, ask if the charge is a flat rate or by the hour. If price isn’t an issue, experience and reviews will matter the most.

Probably the most important aspect of web development is ease of access and navigation. Look through the developer’s website and see how well made it is. Typically, what you see there is what you’ll get. I use the word “typically” because each website for each company is different and the developer’s site could be suited to their own needs/specifications. Make sure you sit down with whoever is in charge of the layout and hash out all the ins and outs of your website.
